Let’s Begin a New Quarter

Reading the introduction reveals my last initial expectation of the lesson content is what will be covered. Managing is about using our money and resources in the last days wisely and in a way that glorifies God. We’re reminded of the testing times ahead when we won’t be able to buy or sell (Rev. 13:17). It is our faith in God and His providence for us that will carry us through. G. Edward Reid points out that ‘kind of faith does not come overnight; by faithfully managing what God has given us, we can be prepared, even now for whatever comes our way.’

On the first couple of pages, we have six scripture references. To learn from scripture, I’ll personally comment or paraphrase all references. My comments next to ‘A’ for answer will be in response to a question posed in the lesson.

Starting with 1 Timothy 6:9,10 telling us about the dangers of temptation and falling into traps when desiring riches. We see this in the world today gambling addictions, dishonesty, and crimes committed against others all in the pursuit of financial gain. The saying ‘money is the root of all evil’ is incorrect rather it is ‘the love of money’ that is ‘the root of all evil’. Tithe money. Spend it. Save it. Invest it.  My understanding of this verse is having a healthy perspective of money protects us. We should not be so desperate to be rich because in our desperation we can lose our faith in God and harm ourselves.

Colossians 1:13, 14 God’s redemption of us from sin through Jesus.

Proverbs 3:9 Honour God first in our money and possessions.

Revelation 4:11 Since everything was created by God and for His pleasure, He receives glory, honour, and power.

Lesson 1: Part of God’s Family

Sabbath 31 December

Memory text: 1 John 3:1 – We’re so loved by God to be called His sons [and daughters].

Philippians 4:19 – This verse is easy to commit to memory verbatim. ‘But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.’

1 John 5:3 – Another short one to remember easily. ‘For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not grievous.’

Genesis 2:7-9,15 – God created man by breathing the breath of life into his nostrils, ‘and man became a living soul’.  God gave Adam the job of taking care of the garden of Eden.

Like Adam and Eve, we too have things to take care of and manage including our monetary resources.
