Sunday 8 January: The Salvation Covenant
The salvation covenant is bilateral. There are two paths: the wide gate leads to destruction while the narrow gate leads to eternal life. (Matthew 7:13-14)
1 John 5:13 – We have eternal life through our belief in Jesus Christ the Son of God our Saviour.
Matthew 10:22 – Followers of Jesus Christ will be hated. Those enduring to the end will be saved.
John 6:29 – Our work is to believe in the One He has sent.
2 Peter 1:10, 11 – Be sure to confirm you’re among God’s called and elect so that you never fall and receive entry into the ‘everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ’.
A: The above texts say people receive the gift of salvation in Jesus by believing and following to confirm we accept this gift.
Paul carried out his part of the bargain in the salvation covenant by fighting the good fight, finishing the course, and keeping the faith. Jesus ‘the righteous judge’ will reward all those who do so with the crown of righteousness. (2 Timothy 4:6-8)
A: The difference between those who accept the gift and those who don’t is acceptance requires work on our part, a more challenging road lies ahead for followers of Jesus Christ. The faith journey is testing however the reward is eternal life in God’s Kingdom.
